Subject একবচন হলে verb একবচন, বহুবচন হলে verb বহুবচন: She writes. / They write. নিয়মটা সহজ, কিন্তু নিচের ক্ষেত্রগুলোতে পরীক্ষায় ফাঁদ থাকে।

১. Each, every, either, neither

এগুলো দিয়ে শুরু হলে verb সাধারণত একবচন।

• Each of the students has a book.
• Every boy and girl was present.
• Neither of the answers is correct.

২. as well as, along with, together with

এদের আগের subject অনুযায়ী verb হয়; পরের অংশ গোনা হয় না।

• The teacher, as well as the students, was present.
• The minister, along with his aides, is arriving today.

৩. either … or, neither … nor

verb-এর সবচেয়ে কাছের subject অনুযায়ী verb হয়।

• Neither the manager nor the clerks were present.
• Either the clerks or the manager is responsible.

৪. The number of / A number of

• The number of applicants is large. (সংখ্যাটি একটি, তাই একবচন)
• A number of applicants are waiting. (অনেক আবেদনকারী, তাই বহুবচন)

৫. Collective noun

দলকে একক হিসেবে ধরলে একবচন: The committee has approved the plan. সদস্যদের আলাদা আলাদা কাজ বোঝালে বহুবচনও ব্যবহার হয়, বিশেষ করে ব্রিটিশ ইংরেজিতে।
